Character Design - Summer Project: Update 2

I have decided that all five pairs of characters will be animals. They will all be linked, as they will all be on the same farm.

Yup... a farm! The story for each character needs to be wrote up. I also need to draw up the other designs, as I only have a few final versions.

Here are the animals I have decided to do so far:

  • Cow
  • Pig
  • Cat
  • Dog
  • Ram

Also, I am in two minds about doing these animals:
  • Donkey/Mule
  • Horse
  • Sheep
  • Chicken/Cockerill
  • Goat
  • Owl
  • Mole
  • Rabbit/Hare
  • Duck
  • Goose
  • Turkey
I know I need to choose another five, but none of these animals are screaming "create me!" at the moment.

Here is a preview of my pig (who is nameless at the moment).

I prefer the shape of number threes face, but with the ears of number five. The smaller eyes and slightly chubbier cheeks give it a "cutesy" appeal.

What do you think? I would love to hear your opinions.

Until next time,

Suzanne

Character Design - Summer Project: Update 1. Roberta The Cow - Prototype Model

Here is my first character design for my university summer project. I'm quite pleased with the design, simple yet effective. I decided not to give the cow udders because of how I wanted the model to be. I am aware that some people would say this is a design flaw, but with udders the model couldn't have been made how I wanted.

As this is just a prototype I didn't ass wire to the arms, although I did add wire to the tail. The arms also need to be a little longer. I would also use plastic eyes, as making them out of plasticine is quite fiddly. It also doesn't leave the cow with a polished, professional look.

A Quick Insight

This post is a quick insight into my sketchbook. For years I wished that my style could be more "realistic" (silly, huh? Considering I'm an animation student), but I longed to draw detailed portraits. My style left any life drawings looking cartoon-like.

I have learnt to accept my style and I will begin to embrace it.

These were drawn using references:

I used myself as a reference for the next two drawings, I had never done this until recently but I was pleased with the results. Also, I have stubby thumbs.

I haven't been drawing much, but I think it's about time I got back into it. I have stages when I can't stop and others when I don't even want to go near a pencil. I've been experiencing the latter of late.

I will post more drawings when I have some!
